Annual Council Meeting:  Saturday, April 25, 2009

The first Annual Meeting of Girl Scouts of Western Ohio will take place on Saturday, April 25, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Girl Scout Center in Dayton, Ohio.  All members are encouraged to attend this meeting and to hear the State of the Council report, as well as be introduced to new and returning board members.  There will be an opportunity to provide input on a specific discussion topic and members will participate in a question and answer session.  The agenda and other information about the meeting are available on the council website.

2009 Recognition Celebrations

It is hard to believe that this membership year is slowly coming to an end. This is a reminder for you and your girls to start thinking about ways to thank and appreciate your girls, parents, volunteers, and community partners in various methods.

The service unit managers have received packets of suggestions and ideas, but remember a “pat on the back” or a simple THANK YOU is sometimes just as effective as a large gift or plaque.

Remember to have your girls be thoughtful about the recognition and as a troop plan a meeting to do a celebration for all those who made the year possible.  Your service team may also plan an event of ceremony or celebration for all of you.

Summer Camp 2009:

We are so excited about the summer camp opportunities we are offering girls in 2009. Girl Scouts of Western Ohio operates a wide variety of camp opportunities in all four regions of our council.  This brochure is divided by region although girls can attend any camp in any of the four regions just by submitting the camp registration form to the location indicated in each section.  Imagine the possibilities that these unique experiences can bring!  Can’t wait to see you at camp this summer.

Visit our website to view the complete camp brochure.  http://camps.girlscoutsofwesternohio.org/CampBrochureFinal.pdf

Reminder: The Troop Activity/Trip Notification Form is required for trips 30 miles away from meeting site, overnights, and high risk activities. Contact your Program Services Specialist if you have any questions.

Please remember there is a NEW camp reservation process.  Please visit the website for the most up-to-date information on Troop Camping.

The Early Bird Catches the Worm!

Resources for Early Registration for the 2010 membership year will be available in early April and distributed to the service unit registrar.  Get a jump on next year by registering early and have one less thing to do in the Fall!  There have been some changes for the 2010 membership Year.  GSUSA is producing new forms so we will no longer be using the current registration forms.  Also, the registration fee has increased from $10 to $12.  Communicate with leaders and parents early to ensure a smooth registration process.

Reminder – Required Training

Just a reminder… Spring is the time for fun activities. It is important for troop leaders to ensure the safety of the girls, which includes participation in required trainings.  Page 24 of the Volunteer Resource Guide states “All volunteers in Girl Scouts of Western Ohio are required to complete two required trainings for the position accepted within six months of appointment; Girl Scout Fundamentals and Job Training for the Appropriate Volunteer Position.”  Make sure to check with your Training Consultant or Training Delivery Specialist regarding your compliance status and don’t allow lack of training to cancel the fun.

Membership News

Do you know an adult who wants to volunteer with the Girl Scouts but can’t commit to a full year? Do you know of a corporation, college, or organization that wants to collaborate with the Girl Scouts but can’t commit to a full year? If so, refer them to your membership recruiter or membership extension specialist, we have short term volunteer opportunities available. As the lives of girls and adults continue to get increasingly busy we are trying to meet their needs through the 6-8 week pathway. To ensure we successfully deliver the Girl Scout program to all girls everywhere, as our founder Juliette Gordon Low envisioned, the membership recruiters and membership extension specialists are working hard to recruit adults from a variety of sources to provide the girls and adults the flexibility they need. We are currently looking for adults to volunteer with Girl Scout Connections and Corporate/Community Troops. Don’t delay, refer someone today!

•          Girl Scout Connections
•          Membership staff will work with other agencies, organizations and community leaders to provide the Girl Scout program experience to girls in targeted communities. Characteristics of these communities are where there is little or no Girl Scout presence, efforts of getting and maintaining a strong volunteer support system have been unsuccessful, or where girls lack interest in participating in Girl Scout troops.
•          Corporate/Community Troop
•          Directly supported by Field Teams.
•          8 sessions; 1 day a week for 1½ hours per session.
•          Serve 15-20 girls per troop led by 2-6 adults.
•          Curriculum addresses specific topic areas.
•          Adult volunteers are provided with small-group training, curriculum, meeting activity materials, celebration funds, and recognitions.
